Magazine Design

How does the design that you created demonstrate your knowledge of Magazine Design and the parts of a magazine cover and interior?

My design utilized my knowledge of magazine design as a whole, both interior and cover because of the parts used throughout my interior and the connection I drew from the cover. Parts like subheads, folio, model credit, photo captions, headlines show my knowledge of magazine design.

In what ways does your magazine connect to the corporate identity of the magazine? What are some design queues that you used from the existing magazine?

Entertainment Weekly is a company that focuses on pop culture whether that is within the music, TV or movie industry. My article on Viola Davis showcases a spotlight on a current leader in the entertainment business. I also used some design queues of the magazine like enlarged page numbers, lines at the top, block text and non-paparazzi shots.

How did completing the brainstorming packet and sketches affect your design process?

Using the brainstorming packet I was able to look into the general trend of Entertainment Weekly and design with more of a connection to some of the previous trend they have shown in their articles. I also was able to get a picture in my head of what I wanted the magazine to look like and as I worked I figured out what worked and what didn’t.

How did you like working with a partner? How do you think working with a partner makes the design process easier and more difficult?

Working with a partner made critiques and side notes much easier as you always had someone to check up with of how your design was flowing. When working solo those comments aren’t as easy to decide on because you always have more faith in your work. But making a two-part project look cohesive in terms of color schemes, font pairings and layout was difficult.

Looking at your partner’s design, if you were to design your partner’s portion by yourself how would it look different? What would you have changed?

If I was to have made the cover I may have tried a different color scheme, although I like the yellow I may have tried a pink or red to tie on with the blood spatter I used in the article.

Describe the ideal partner (co-worker / co –designer)?

My ideal partner would be open to critiques while still having a backbone and standing by his/her designs. They would have a good eye for design and be able to detect even minute issues. I think Meaghan embodied this very well and we worked as one cohesive unit.
